Water: This represents purity, washing away, covering up. Water washes away blood and covers up a crime. It is also a symbol of live as we need water to live so has strong meaning in a thriller.

Hands: Hands are what commit the crime, and so are important in a thriller. For example in 'When a stranger calls' hands are needed to dial a phone number. In 'The number 23' hands are needed to commit murder.

Weapons: This is a thriller convention because weapons are used to hurt people, we know that if a weapon is involved a murder will happen. The difference between a thriller and horror is that we know who the murderer is in a horror, we are left in suspense in a thriller.

Extreme close up shot: This shot is usually used for eyes, which are also a typical thriller conventions. An extreme close up shows even more detail than a close up.

Establishing shot: This is also used in a thriller, usually in the opening sequence to establish the setting, which is usually an isolated place.

Close up camera shot: This is a typical shot used in thriller films as it exaggerates small details, such as facial expressions.

This film also received 5 stars, and was a suspense thriller. It was not a long film, only 85 minutes, however this is an advantage to the film as it was full of suspense and fast pace editing, however not too fast or it would have been difficult to follow. The story unravels until it reaches a climax when we know what is happening and all that's left is to see if the people survive. The setting is typical thriller as it is set 'in the middle of no where', suggesting the budget was quite low as there are no well known actors, also there is just one setting.

This is another thriller that received a certificate 15, also there was a higher male audience than female audience. There are 2 main characters, one male and one female, so you would expect the audience to be more 50/50, however there is 8% more males than females. The age groups are spread quite well, the audience consisted of more teens to younger adults, however there was still 13% of people over 35 that saw the film.

This film managed to receive 5 stars, so was very popular with the audience. It is a 1979 film, a time when films were given a higher certificate than they would be now. The film would relate to teenage baby sitters as the girl is baby sitting 2 children when she gets a prank phone call from a mystery person. The fact that the film relates so much with the audience is the reason it receives 5 stars.

This film was marked a horror/thriller and a certificate 15. This is again because of murder scenes and shots of dead people. The audience was more male than female, the main character is female, which could be a reason for a bigger male audience. The main character is also a teenager which obviously had an affect on the amount of teenagers and young adults that saw the film. 69% of the audience were aged 15-24, whereas 11% of the audience were aged 35 and over.

This film received 4 stars and given the genre suspense thriller. The director has used a well known actor to sell the film, however other actors are not so well known, suggesting that the budget for the film was not very high, but high enough to afford Jim Carrey as the main character. The film received a certificate 15 due to violence and murder scenes.

This research shows that more men than women went to see this film, however there is a not a massive difference between the figures, so on average the audience was a mix of male and females. The film was certificate 15 so obviously no one younger than this saw the film. The biggest audience was aged between 15 and 24, showing that more teenagers and young adults saw the film than middle age. There is an increase in the amount of people over 45 that saw the film, compared the the amount of 34-44 year olds.
